Alive (1993) is a biographical survival drama based on Piers Paul Read’s book, Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors. As Carlitos Páez surveys a series of photographs featuring the Old Christians Rugby Team from Stella Maris College, he recalls the events of the fateful day in a brief monologue. On October 13, 1972, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 flies over the Andes as the raucous rugby players and their loved ones eagerly anticipate an upcoming match in Chile. However, their excitement is abruptly cut short as the plane hits turbulence and collides with a mountain, causing its wings and tail to detach from the fuselage. The plane then slides down a mountain slope before coming to a halt. Sadly, six passengers and one flight attendant are ejected from the aircraft and do not survive. In this chaotic situation, team captain Antonio takes charge by coordinating efforts to aid the injured passengers.

Roberto Canessa and Gustavo Zerbino, both medical students, assist the wounded. Another six passengers, including both pilots and Nando’s mother Eugenia, pass away. Nando, who sustained a head injury, falls into a coma while his sister Susana suffers severe internal injuries. As night falls, the survivors prepare for the long hours ahead. Canessa discovers that the seat covers can double as blankets when unzipped. The group huddles together in the fuselage for warmth as Antonio, Roy Harley, and Rafael Cano use luggage to block the opening at the end of the plane. Two more passengers do not survive through the night. With no means of hunting or foraging on the mountain, Antonio suggests rationing when they come across a tin of chocolates and a case of wine.
