The biographical crime thriller film All the Money in the World (2017), directed by Ridley Scott and written by David Scarpa, is based on John Pearson’s book Painfully Rich: The Outrageous Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Heirs of J. Paul Getty. It centers around the 1973 kidnapping of John Paul Getty III and his grandfather’s refusal to pay the ransom demanded by the kidnappers. Set in Rome during that time, a group of masked men abduct teenage John Paul, while his grandfather Jean Paul remains notoriously stingy despite being the world’s richest human and a billionaire oil tycoon. Despite the abduction of his favorite grandson, Jean Paul refuses to part with any of his fortune.
In this captivating film we follow Gail, a devoted and strong-willed mother to Paul. Despite Getty’s constant focus on his fortune, Gail has consistently prioritized her children. As her son’s life hangs in the balance and time is of the essence, she valiantly tries to change Getty’s mind while also facing increasingly determined, volatile, and brutal mob captors. With Getty sending his mysterious security man Fletcher Chace to protect his interests, Gail and Fletcher surprisingly become allies in the race against time – ultimately revealing the true value of love over money.d in the river; investigators erroneously identify the body as Paul’s, but Gail examines the body and refutes this.
