All the Pretty Horses (2000), directed and produced by Billy Bob Thornton, is an American Western film based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel of the same name. After his family’s ranch is sold in 1949, cowboy John Grady Cole becomes homeless and implores his friend Lacey Rawlins to join him on a journey to Mexico for work. Along the way, they befriend a strange boy named Jimmy Blevins before parting ways. In their travels, they meet Alejandra Villarreal, an aristocrat’s daughter who captures Cole’s heart. The two become hired hands for Alejandra’s pleased father, but her wealthy aunt disapproves of Cole’s romantic intentions towards her niece. Following Alejandra being taken away by her father, Cole and Rawlins are apprehended by Mexican authorities and brought to jail.

There, they encounter Blevins, who has been charged with horse theft and murder and ultimately meets his demise at the hands of a corrupt captain. As a result of their association with Blevins, Cole and Rawlins find themselves locked up in a dangerous Mexican prison, where they must fend off violent inmates. Despite almost losing their lives, Cole is eventually released when Alejandra’s aunt intervenes, on the condition that he never sets foot near her family again. While Rawlins returns to his family’s ranch in Texas, Cole attempts to reconcile with Alejandra despite objections from her relatives. Her aunt is so confident that Alejandra will uphold her promise to stay away from Cole that she even provides him with her niece’s phone number.
