All the Right Moves (1983)
Directed by Michael Chapman, All the Right Moves (1983) is an American sports drama film that follows Stefen ‘Stef’ Djordjevic, a gifted athlete and B student. Stef, a Serbian American, hopes to earn a college football scholarship and leave his economically depressed hometown of Ampipe behind. He dreams of becoming an electrical engineer after graduation, unlike his grandfather, father, and brother Greg who all worked at the struggling steel mill in town. Despite the downturn of the early 1980s recession, Ampipe is still heavily dependent on its main employer, American Pipe & Steel. Stef finds solace in his girlfriend Lisa Lietzke and his close relationship with his teammates as he navigates life in a company town.
During the highly anticipated football match against Walnut Heights High School, Ampipe was on track to win until a fumbled handoff in the final moments and Stefen’s earlier pass interference penalty led to victory for Walnut Heights. In the locker room after the game, Coach Vern Nickerson harshly criticized the player responsible for the fumble, accusing him of “quitting” on his team. When Stefen challenged the coach’s own actions during the game, he was dismissed from the team. The aftermath of the loss resulted in angry Ampipe fans vandalizing Coach Nickerson’s property. While present, Stefen did not actively participate but was seen by Coach Nickerson as part of the group of vandals as they fled.
