Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold (1986)

The film, Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold (1986), was directed by Gary Nelson. Following their successful journey to King Solomon’s Mines, Allan Quatermain and Jesse have settled in colonial Africa where they plan to get married. While Jesse intends to travel to America for the wedding, Allan is feeling restless. One day, a man being chased by two masked individuals appears from the jungle. It turns out that he is a friend of Quatermain’s who has been delirious and seeking help. Despite receiving care from Jesse and Allan, the man is killed by his pursuers at night. Before passing away, he reveals to Allan that his supposedly lost brother is still alive and that they have located the legendary ‘Lost City of Gold’. This news immediately prompts Quatermain to start preparing for an expedition to find his long-lost brother. Although initially angry with Allan’s sudden plans, Jesse eventually realizes the importance of this mission to him.

Allan and Jesse enlist the help of Umslopogaas, a fearless warrior and close companion, to assemble an expedition. They are also accompanied by Swarma, a wise spiritual leader, and five Askari warriors. After traversing a desert, they finally reach the Walls of Japora. Unfortunately, two of the Askari soldiers fall victim to a boobytrap set by Swarma which opens up a pit beneath them. As if that wasn’t enough hardship for their journey, they are ambushed by fierce Eshowe warriors resulting in the loss of one more party member. However, with his impressive giant axe skills, Umslopogaas is able to deflect most of the spears thrown at them. Tragically, their remaining Askari comrades are lost when they encounter a treacherous subterranean river. Despite these challenges, Quatermain and his companions persevere and ultimately discover the city they were seeking.
