Allied (2016)
Allied (2016) is a romantic war drama thriller film directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Steven Knight. Set in 1942 during World War II, the plot centers on Wing Commander Max Vatan, a Royal Canadian Air Force pilot with intelligence duties. His assignment takes him to Casablanca in Morocco, where he is tasked with assassinating a German ambassador. To aid him in his mission, he is joined by Marianne Beauséjour, a courageous French Resistance fighter who fled France after her group was compromised and killed. Pretending to be a married couple, Max and Marianne begin their dangerous task. Despite being aware of the risks involved in their line of work, they grow close to each other. Marianne uses her trust amongst the Germans to obtain an invitation for Max to attend the party where they plan to carry out the assassination. With caution in mind, they engage in intimate relations inside their car amidst a raging sandstorm. Their success leads them to continue working together until one day Max asks Marianne to join him in London as his wife.
After they officially tie the knot, the couple settles down in Hampstead. Soon, Marianne goes into labor with a baby girl they lovingly name Anna. Unfortunately, her arrival coincides with a German air raid. A year passes and it is now 1944. To Max’s shock, he receives word from the Special Operations Executive that his wife is suspected of being a German spy. The real Marianne, who was killed in France, had assumed her identity. On top of this, the German ambassador they assassinated turns out to be a dissident that Hitler himself wanted dead. In order to confirm their suspicions, SOE devises a ‘blue dye’ operation and tasks Max with writing down false intelligence at home for Marianne to discover. If this information is picked up by intercepted German transmissions, Max will be forced to execute her personally. If he is found to be an accomplice, he will face execution for high treason. In the meantime, he is instructed to behave normally and refrain from conducting his own investigations.
