After Detective Dr. Alex Cross of Washington DC, a forensic psychologist and writer, loses control of a sting operation and his partner Tracie Fisher dies, he decides to retire from the police force. However, his break from work is short-lived as Gary Soneji, a computer science teacher, kidnaps Megan Rose, the daughter of a US senator from her private school. The breach in security that allowed Soneji to take the girl is blamed on US Secret Service Special Agent Jezzie Flannigan. In response to this incident, Cross and Flannigan team up to find Soneji and rescue Megan.
Upon receiving a phone call from Soneji, Cross is overcome with horror and panic as he discovers a small sneaker belonging to Megan in his mailbox. It becomes evident to Cross that Soneji is attempting to replicate the infamous 1932 Charles A. Lindbergh Jr. kidnapping, commonly referred to as the Crime of the Century. Knowing that Soneji is seeking recognition similar to that of Richard Hauptmann, Cross becomes even more determined to bring him to justice and safely rescue Megan. He believes this intense pursuit would make for a gripping storyline in one of his true crime books. Despite Soneji’s public identity, the FBI is unable to apprehend him until Cross covertly tracks his calls and whereabouts.
