Always Be My Maybe (2019)
Always Be My Maybe (2019) is a romantic comedy, co-written by Ali Wong, Randall Park and Michael Golamco, and directed by Nahnatchka Khan. Sasha Tran and Marcus Kim are lifelong friends who grew up next door to each other in San Francisco. As a child, Sasha’s Vietnamese-immigrant parents often left her alone while they tended their store, so she spent many evenings at Marcus’ house where his Korean-American mother Judy taught her how to cook. Their friendship deepens into their teenage years until tragedy strikes when Marcus’ mother passes away. In the midst of their grief, they share a brief but intimate moment before drifting apart after a heated argument. Sixteen years later, Sasha is a renowned chef engaged to successful restaurateur Brandon Choi while Marcus still resides in San Francisco with his father and plays in a local band.
Jenny, an Asian American woman with dreadlocks, is the girlfriend of Brandon. However, after he postpones their wedding once more, Sasha ends things with him. She temporarily moves back to the Bay Area to oversee the opening of a new restaurant and runs into Marcus while he and his father are working on installing air conditioning at her temporary home. Although they initially clash, they eventually rekindle their friendship and Marcus admits to his father that he still has feelings for Sasha. Unfortunately, before he can tell her, Sasha reveals that she has met someone else and they go on a disastrous double date with Marcus’ girlfriend and Sasha’s new love interest – movie star Keanu Reeves. The night takes a chaotic turn as Sasha confesses her childhood crush on Marcus, a physical altercation occurs between Marcus and Keanu, and Jenny ends up spending the night with Keanu.
