Amélie (2001)
Amélie (2001) is a French-language romantic comedy film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The titular character is born in 1974 and raised by eccentric parents who, believing she has a heart defect, choose to homeschool her. To combat her isolation, Amélie develops a vivid imagination and mischievous nature. Tragically, her mother Amandine is killed when a suicidal tourist jumps from Notre-Dame de Paris. As a result, Amélie’s father Raphaël retreats further into seclusion. At the age of 18, Amélie leaves home and starts working as a waitress at the Café des 2 Moulins in Montmartre – a haven for an eclectic group of individuals.
An unmarried woman, she freely indulges in her imaginative musings, finding joy in simple delights such as running her fingers through grain sacks, cracking open crème brûlée with a spoon, and skipping stones across the Canal Saint-Martin. But on 31 August 1997, upon learning of the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, Amélie’s world is shaken. In a moment of surprise and distraction, she accidentally drops a plastic perfume-stopper which reveals an old metal box hidden behind a loose wall tile. Curiosity leads her to open the box and discover childhood memorabilia left by a previous resident of her apartment. Determined to reunite the box with its rightful owner – now grown up – Amélie makes a vow to dedicate herself to spreading happiness if it brings him joy.
