American Animals (2018), a docudrama heist film written and directed by Bart Layton, follows the story of art student Spencer Reinhard. Seeking inspiration for his work, Spencer is given a tour of Transylvania University library’s rare-book collection. During the tour, he becomes fixated on a rare first edition of John James Audubon’s Birds of America. Spencer shares his idea with his rebellious friend Warren Lipka, who is attending the University of Kentucky on an athletic scholarship. They discuss the possibility of stealing the valuable books and selling them to black-market buyers in Amsterdam for millions of dollars. With only one librarian guarding the collection and an easily accessible staff elevator for their escape, they believe it would be a simple job. To make their plan a reality, they enlist the help of two other friends: Eric Borsuk for logistics and Chas Allen as the getaway driver.

In order to access the room, they schedule a private viewing of the collection and arrive disguised as elderly businessmen. However, upon seeing multiple librarians in the room, Warren decides to call off the heist. Despite Spencer’s desire to abandon the plan, Warren convinces him and the others to try again the following day. Acting as lookout, Spencer watches as Warren and Eric enter the library without disguises. During their attempt, Warren carelessly uses a stun gun on a librarian and enlists Eric’s help in restraining her. In their hastiness to escape, they drop The Birds of America but manage to flee with two books. In an effort to authenticate the books’ value for their supposed Dutch buyers, they travel to Christie’s auction house in New York. There, Spencer is instructed to return the next day and leaves his cell phone number with an assistant.
