American Beauty (1999)
American Beauty (1999), a dark comedy-drama film, was written by Alan Ball and marked Sam Mendes’ debut as a feature director. The movie centers on Lester Burnham, an unsatisfied middle-aged executive living in suburbia and married to the high-strung real estate agent Carolyn. Their daughter Jane, who is 16 years old, has low self-esteem and harbors resentment towards her parents. Next door, retired Marine colonel Frank Fitts moves in with his wife Barbara and their teenage son Ricky. Ricky has a passion for capturing everyday moments on videotape with his camcorder and finances this hobby by selling marijuana under the cover of part-time catering jobs.
Known for being strict and abusive, Frank had previously sent Ricky away to a psychiatric hospital and military academy. The Fitts family’s arrival is welcomed by their neighbors Jim Olmeyer and Jim Berkley, who are a gay couple but this angers the homophobic Frank. One evening at a high school basketball game, Lester becomes infatuated with Angela Hayes, a friend of Jane who boasts about her sexual experience. He begins to fantasize about her, often incorporating red rose petals into his thoughts. Meanwhile, Carolyn engages in an affair with her married real estate rival, Buddy Kane. In the midst of all this, Lester quits his job and manipulates his boss Brad into giving him a large severance package before taking on a new job at Mr. Smiley’s fast-food restaurant.
