American Crime Story is an American anthology true crime television series developed by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who are executive producers with Brad Falchuk, Nina Jacobson, Ryan Murphy, and Brad Simpson. Similar to the fictional horror anthology series American Horror Story, also from Murphy and Falchuk, each season is presented as a self-contained miniseries, following separate unrelated true events. Alexander and Karaszewski did not return after the first season, but they retained executive producer credit. The series is broadcast on the cable television channel FX in the United States.
The first season, subtitled The People v. O. J. Simpson, presented the murder trial of O. J. Simpson, based on Jeffrey Toobin’s book The Run of His Life: The People v. O. J. Simpson. It premiered on February 2, 2016. The second season, subtitled The Assassination of Gianni Versace, explored the murder of designer Gianni Versace by spree killer Andrew Cunanan, based on Maureen Orth’s book Vulgar Favors: Andrew Cunanan, Gianni Versace, and the Largest Failed Manhunt in U.S. History. The season premiered on January 17, 2018, concluding on March 21, 2018. Another season, based on the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, was in development, but in February 2019, FX announced that the idea had been scrapped. The third season, subtitled Impeachment, is set to chronicle the impeachment of 42nd President of the United States Bill Clinton for charges of perjury and obstruction of justice, based on another book written by Toobin entitled A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President. The season is set to premiere on September 7, 2021.
