American Flyers (1985)
American Flyers (1985), a sports drama directed by John Badham, follows the story of Marcus Sommers, a sports physician who returns to his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri after a long absence. Upon arriving, Marcus has a disagreement with his mother regarding the handling of his father’s death from a cerebral aneurysm. Worried about her other son David’s health due to their family history with the condition, she expresses her concerns. Marcus convinces David to join him in Madison for some quality time together and also undergo testing at his sports medicine center. As they prepare for the test, David playfully challenges Marcus to break his own record. In a heartwarming moment, David not only surpasses Marcus’ record but also receives cheers from everyone in the room, including his proud brother.
Overhearing Marcus mention not wanting to worry him, David assumes he has an aneurysm. To prove his point, Marcus shows a ‘Hell of the West’ video from a previous race where he quit mid-race. He admits to being quite skilled at quitting without anyone noticing. Inspired by Marcus, David and his girlfriend Sarah decide to embark on a trip to the bicycling event in Colorado. While camping, David asks for Marcus’ advice on treating an aneurysm, but is informed that surgery could have negative effects on vital brain functions. During a stop at McDonald’s, David meets Becky and invites her to join their journey.
