American Hustle (2013)

American Hustle (2013) is a black comedy crime film, helmed by director David O. Russell and written by Eric Warren Singer. The movie drew inspiration from the real-life FBI Abscam operation that took place during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Set in 1978, it follows the tale of con artists Irving Rosenfeld and Sydney Prosser, who have teamed up to pull off various scams. To improve their schemes, Sydney assumes the guise of ‘Lady Edith Greensly’, an English aristocrat. Despite their successful partnership, Irving is torn between his love for Sydney and his loyalty towards his volatile wife, Rosalyn. Rosalyn has threatened to report Irving to the authorities if he ever leaves her or their adopted son Danny. In the midst of all this drama, FBI agent Richie DiMaso arrests Irving and Sydney for a loan scam but offers them a way out if they can help him nab four more criminals. Unbeknownst to Richie, though, Sydney’s British pedigree is fabricated, and she confides in Irving that she plans on using her charm to manipulate him and keep him at arm’s length.
Irving’s acquaintance, a faux wealthy Arab sheikh, is seeking investment opportunities in the United States. One of Irving’s colleagues proposes that the sheikh collaborate with Mayor Carmine Polito of Camden, New Jersey, who is attempting to boost gambling in Atlantic City, but has faced difficulties finding backers. It appears that Carmine genuinely wants to enhance the local economy and assist his constituents. To achieve their goal, Richie concocts a plan to entrap Mayor Polito, despite objections from both Irving and Richie’s superior, Stoddard Thorsen. With Sydney’s assistance, Richie manipulates an FBI secretary into transferring $2 million without proper authorization. Upon learning of the operation, Stoddard’s boss Anthony Amado commends Richie for taking initiative and urges Stoddard to proceed.
