American Made (2017)
American Made (2017), an action comedy film directed by Doug Liman and written by Gary Spinelli, draws inspiration from the life of Barry Seal. A former TWA pilot who later became a drug smuggler for the Medellín Cartel, Seal is eventually recruited as an informant for the DEA. The CIA also takes notice of Seal’s ability to smuggle Cuban cigars into the country and enlists him to take aerial photographs of Sandinista bases in 1978. Soon, he becomes involved with Pablo Escobar’s infamous cartel, led by Jorge Ochoa and Carlos Lehder, who want a part of his profitable activities. This leads to Seal leading a dangerous triple life, working under Monty Schafer as he continues his missions while avoiding jail time. However, Schafer’s greed leads him to assign increasingly perilous tasks to Seal, including flying guns to the Nicaraguan Contras during the Iran-Contra scandal in the late 1980s under Ronald Reagan’s administration.
In 1978, Barry Seal, a pilot for Trans World Airlines, is approached at a bar by a man named Monty Schafer. Schafer recognizes Barry’s skills as a pilot and offers him the opportunity to undertake covert reconnaissance missions for the CIA in a smaller aircraft equipped with cameras, just south of the border. Despite initial hesitation, Schafer persuades Barry that his work will serve a greater good. However, this arrangement must remain top secret, even from his own family. Impressed by Barry’s abilities, Schafer assigns him to act as a middleman between the CIA and General Manuel Noriega in Panama. As he begins this new job, Barry records his travels and adventures on tapes while flying over countries like Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.
