American Psycho (2000), a satirical psychological thriller film, is directed and co-written by Mary Harron and Guinevere Turner respectively. Set in 1987, the story follows investment banker Patrick Bateman as he maintains his façade for his fiancée Evelyn Williams and wealthy acquaintances. During a business meeting, Bateman’s colleagues showcase their business cards and obsess over their designs. One particular card belonging to Paul Allen sparks anger in Bateman, leading him to kill a homeless man and his dog later that night. As Bateman plans dinner with Allen after a Christmas party, he harbors resentment towards Allen’s lavish lifestyle and ability to secure reservations at the exclusive restaurant Dorsia – which Bateman cannot seem to get into.
After getting Allen drunk and luring him to his apartment where he kills him, Bateman disposes of the body. He then leaves a fabricated message on Allen’s answering machine claiming that he has gone to London. Private investigator Donald Kimball interviews Bateman about Allen’s disappearance, mentioning the possibility of him being seen in London. Later, Bateman invites sex workers Christie and Sabrina to his apartment where he tortures and pays them before sending them away. At another point, Bateman’s coworker Luis Carruthers shows off a new business card and Bateman attempts to strangle him in the restroom of an expensive restaurant. However, Carruthers mistakes this action for a sexual advance and expresses his attraction towards Bateman who is repulsed and quickly leaves.
