American Sniper (2014)

American Sniper (2014) is a biographical war drama film directed and co-produced by Clint Eastwood. It was written and executive-produced by Jason Hall, based on the memoir American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History (2012) by Chris Kyle with Scott McEwen and Jim DeFelice. Growing up in Texas, Chris is taught how to shoot a rifle and hunt deer by his father. As an adult, he becomes a ranch hand and rodeo cowboy but returns home early one day to find his girlfriend in bed with another man. After asking her to leave, he discusses it with his brother before seeing news coverage of the 1998 U.S. embassy bombings. Motivated to take action, he enlists in the Navy and qualifies for special training as a sniper with the SEALs. While stationed in San Diego, Chris meets Taya Studebaker at an Irish pub and they soon marry. Following the September 11 attacks, he is deployed to Iraq.
During his time as a U.S. Marine, Kyle’s first victims are a woman and young boy who attacked his patrol using a Russian made RKG-3 anti-tank grenade. The experience leaves him visibly shaken, but he soon becomes known as ‘Legend’ due to his many successful kills. As part of his mission to capture al-Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, Kyle questions a family who claims they can lead the SEALs to al-Zarqawi’s second-in-command, known as ‘The Butcher’. However, the plan goes awry when The Butcher captures and kills the family members while Kyle is under sniper fire from an opponent named Mustafa – an Olympic Games medalist from Syria. As if that weren’t enough, insurgents also put out a bounty on Kyle. Despite these challenges, Kyle eventually returns home to his wife just in time for the birth of their son.
