America's Sweethearts (2001)
America’s Sweethearts (2001), directed by Joe Roth, is a romantic comedy. Lee Phillips, a seasoned publicist, gets fired from his job at a major film studio. Afterwards, studio head Dave Kingman invites him for a private screening of Time Over Time, a new time travel thriller starring the beloved husband-and-wife team Eddie Thomas and Gwen Harrison. However, their marriage ended when Gwen had an affair with her co-star Hector, causing Eddie to have a mental breakdown and seek treatment at a remote New Age wellness retreat. Despite Lee’s arrival, Kingman has nothing to show as the film’s director Hal Weidmann refuses to release it until the upcoming press junket. Desperate to salvage the movie from the recent string of flops and possibly being their last together, Kingman asks Lee to promote it at the junket by convincing the press that Eddie and Gwen are back together.
In return for success in this task, he promises to reinstate Lee’s job that was just taken away from him. To help achieve this goal, Lee enlists rookie publicist Danny as his ally. Lee makes a stop at Gwen’s new residence, where she now lives with Hector, in hopes of persuading her to attend the junket. Kiki, who acts as Gwen’s sister and personal assistant, manages to convince her that participating in the junket will be beneficial for her struggling career and public image. During their stay at the wellness retreat, Lee offers a luxury car as a bribe to the spiritual guru, in order to convince Eddie to confront Gwen. At the actual event, Gwen puts on a friendly facade with Eddie for the sake of media coverage, but their interactions off-stage remain strained.
