Ammonite (2020)
Ammonite (2020), a romantic drama film written and directed by Francis Lee, loosely follows the life of British palaeontologist Mary Anning, portrayed by Kate Winslet. In the 1840s, Mary and her ailing mother Molly run a small shop in Lyme Regis, Dorset. Every morning, she heads to the beach at low tide to search for fossils for the shop – with ammonites being her most common discovery. Upon returning, she assists her mother in cleaning and polishing eight animal figurines. One day, geologist Roderick Murchison visits their shop with his wife Charlotte and expresses admiration for Mary’s work. He offers to pay for a guided trip to learn about fossil collecting from Mary – despite their initial friction, she agrees. That night at the Three Cups Hotel, Roderick rebuffs Charlotte’s sexual advances and states that now is not the time to have another child.
Upon Roderick’s return from their morning expedition, he discovers Charlotte bedridden and despondent. He then informs Mary that Charlotte has been sent to Lyme Regis for recovery and asks her to look after her in his absence as he departs for Europe for four to six weeks. Despite her reluctance, Mary agrees, motivated by the financial gain. As part of her rehabilitation, Charlotte starts accompanying Mary on her beach excursions. However, while bathing in the ocean, she falls ill with a high fever. Dr. Lieberson prescribes bed rest and appoints Mary as her caregiver. In an effort to aid Charlotte’s recovery, Mary purchases a jar of salve from her friend Elizabeth Philpot, but declines her offer to visit Charlotte in person.
