An Ideal Husband (1999)

The British film An Ideal Husband (1999), based on the 1895 play by Oscar Wilde, follows a group of upper-class individuals before the turn of the 20th century. At a fashionable park outing, Lady Markby reconnects with Mrs. Laura Cheveley, an old school acquaintance. Laura is eager to meet Gertrude’s husband, Sir Robert Chiltern, and Lady Markby suggests bringing her to the evening’s ball. Although Gertrude initially hesitates, she ultimately cannot refuse without appearing rude. At the extravagant party at the Chiltern residence, Laura tries to manipulate Sir Robert into supporting a bill for a questionable canal project by using incriminating letters from his past. These letters reveal his involvement in insider trading related to the Suez Canal and could ruin his reputation and career. Despite his initial refusal, Sir Robert eventually gives in to protect himself.
As she prepares to leave the party, Laura informs Gertrude that her spouse has decided to back the canal project, much to the surprise of the politician’s wife. While at the event, Laura meets her former fiancé Lord Arthur Goring and hopes to reignite their romantic relationship. However, Arthur reminds her that she ended their engagement in order to marry a wealthier man. When questioned by his wife about his sudden change of opinion, Robert writes a letter to Laura explaining that he will now oppose the bill. The following morning, Robert confesses to Arthur about Laura’s blackmail attempt and seeks advice on how to handle the situation. Despite Arthur’s suggestion to reveal his own past mistake and risk losing his wife’s respect, Robert refuses and instead asks Arthur to speak with Gertrude and break the news gently.
