Directed by Taylor Hackford, An Officer and a Gentleman (1982) is a romantic drama film with a screenplay by Douglas Day Stewart. After graduating college, Zachary ‘Zack’ Mayo surprises his father, a U.S. Navy Boatswain’s mate, by enrolling in Aviation Officer Candidate School (AOCS) near Port Townsend, Washington to pursue his dream of becoming a Navy jet pilot. At AOCS, Zack meets fellow recruits and their intimidating drill instructor, Marine Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley. Foley stresses that the school only accepts the most capable officer-candidates and warns them of the ‘Puget Sound Debs’ who will go to extreme lengths to marry a Naval Aviator. At a Navy dance, Zack and OC Sid Worley meet two young factory workers named Paula Pokrifki and Lynette Pomeroy. Zack and Paula start dating, while Sid does the same with Lynette.

However, after being caught selling prohibited uniform accessories to other OCs to help them pass inspections, Foley decides that Zack is not suitable for a Navy officer. Despite facing harsh punishment, Zack refuses to drop out (DOR), which only confirms Foley’s belief. Eventually, Foley kicks Zack out of the program. Feeling at a loss, Zack opens up to Foley and admits his limited prospects in life. Moved by his vulnerability, Foley has a change of heart and gives him another chance. Determined to prove himself, Zack distributes all of his stocked uniform accessories to the other OCs for free. Meanwhile, his relationship with Paula becomes complicated due to her stepfather’s doubts about Zack’s true intentions towards her. This may also stem from Paula’s past experience with her father who was an officer candidate and abandoned her mother when she became pregnant with Paula.
