Angel Heart (1987)
Angel Heart (1987), an American neo-noir psychological horror film, is based on William Hjortsberg’s 1978 novel Falling Angel. In the movie, private investigator Harry Angel receives a job offer from a man called Louis Cyphre to locate John Liebling, also known as Johnny Favorite, a singer who suffered neurological damage during World War II. This injury has affected Favorite’s ability to fulfill his contract with Cyphre, which involved some form of collateral. Believing that a private hospital where Favorite was receiving psychiatric treatment is hiding something, Cyphre asks Harry for help. After investigating, Harry discovers that records at the hospital were falsified by physician Albert Fowler. Sneaking into Fowler’s home, Harry confronts him and learns that years ago Fowler was bribed by a couple who wanted to take Favorite away due to his disfigurement.
Suspecting that Fowler is still withholding information, Harry locks him in his bedroom and forces him through morphine withdrawal. The next day, he finds that the doctor has apparently committed suicide. In an attempt to terminate his contract with Cyphre, Harry ultimately relents after receiving a lucrative offer. His investigation leads him to discover that Favorite was engaged to Margaret Krusemark, but was also involved in a hidden relationship with Evangeline Proudfoot. Upon arriving in New Orleans, Harry crosses paths with Margaret, who reveals that Favorite is either deceased or no longer in her life. Although Evangeline passed away years ago, she left behind a 17-year-old daughter named Epiphany Proudfoot – the result of her affair with Favorite.
