Another Earth (2011), a film directed by Mike Cahill and starring Brit Marling, William Mapother, and Robin Lord Taylor, tells the story of Rhoda Williams. This brilliant 17-year-old girl has always been fascinated by astronomy and is overjoyed when she is accepted into MIT. To celebrate her achievement, she goes out with friends and unfortunately ends up driving while intoxicated. While listening to a radio story about a newly discovered Earth-like planet, she looks at the stars and accidentally hits another car at an intersection. This leads to the death of John Burroughs’ pregnant wife and son as well as putting him in a coma. After serving her four-year prison sentence, Rhoda works as a janitor at her old high school but struggles with immense guilt and regret for her actions.
After becoming aware of the recent media coverage surrounding the mirror Earth, Rhoda decides to enter an essay competition hosted by a wealthy entrepreneur. The prize? A trip to the mirror Earth for a civilian space flight. One day, while passing by the accident site, Rhoda notices John leaving a toy there. Feeling guilty about her role in the accident, she makes plans to apologize to him. However, when she arrives at his house and sees him at the door, her courage falters and she comes up with a different plan. Acting as if she is a maid promoting a cleaning service, she offers John a free day of cleaning. Having recently left his teaching position at Yale due to personal reasons, John has let both himself and his home go. He accepts Rhoda’s offer without recognizing who she really is. Pleased with her work, he invites her to return the following week.
