Another Woman (1988)
Another Woman (1988), an American drama film written and directed by Woody Allen, follows the story of Marion Post, a New York philosophy professor on leave from her job to work on a new book. In need of peace and quiet, she sublets a furnished apartment downtown due to construction in her building. However, her work there is disrupted by the voices of a therapist and his client in an adjacent office. Listening in on their sessions, Marion becomes increasingly intrigued by the words of another woman, Hope. Hope expresses feelings of emptiness and falseness in her life, which deeply resonates with Marion.
This leads Marion to reflect on her own actions and relationships – realizing that she has been unfair, judgmental and unkind to those closest to her: her brother Paul and his wife Lynn, who feel like they are an embarrassment to her; Claire, her high school best friend who feels overshadowed; Sam, her first husband who tragically committed suicide; and Laura, her stepdaughter who both admires and resents her domineering nature. In addition to recognizing her unsatisfying marriage to Ken, Marion regrets missing her chance at love with his best friend, Larry. During a therapy session focused on a Klimt painting called ‘Hope’, she meets the woman who has been on her mind.
