Anthony Zimmer (2005)
Anthony Zimmer (2005), a French romantic thriller film written and directed by Jérôme Salle, follows the story of a brilliant career criminal who is wanted by police worldwide. Evading authorities with his clever tactics, Zimmer legally launders money through fake corporations that file lawsuits against international companies. The elusive Zimmer is also on the run from the ‘White Collar Barons’, a powerful Russian mafia he once worked with. After undergoing plastic surgery, there is no known description of his appearance, making him even harder to catch. However, detective Akerman is determined to bring him to justice and knows that Zimmer’s love for Chiara Manzoni, whom he left behind after his surgery, will be his downfall.
Excited to see Zimmer again, Chiara heads to a restaurant and receives a message from her boyfriend, instructing her to ‘pick up’ a stranger who resembles him. The goal is to throw off their pursuers. Chiara takes the TGV high-speed train and chooses François Taillandier, a plain 38-year-old translator who enjoys detective novels. His wife had left him six months ago. François becomes infatuated with this alluring woman and struggles to focus on his yogurt and novel. Upon arriving in Cannes, Chiara invites François to join her at the Carlton Hotel and even gifts him a watch with Zimmer’s name on it.
