Antwone Fisher (2002), the subject of an American biographical drama film, made his directorial debut with Denzel Washington at the helm. The protagonist is a passionate but troubled young man from Cleveland, Ohio, who has a history of violence and is currently serving in the U.S. Navy. His father’s untimely death occurred before his birth and his teenage mother, Eva Mae Fisher, was arrested and imprisoned shortly after giving birth to him. He spent his first years in an orphanage until his mother’s release allowed her to take him in. However, she failed to do so by the time he turned two, and he was placed under the care of Mr. and Mrs. Tate until he reached fourteen years old. At fourteen, he left their foster home behind and took to living on the streets for several years before ultimately deciding to join the Navy in hopes of building a better life for himself.

Due to his difficult upbringing, Antwone possesses a tendency towards anger, which leads to his punishment by the captain after a fight with a colleague. The consequences include demotion, a fine, and being confined to the ship for 45 days. He is also instructed to seek psychiatric treatment by his commanding officer. Initially resistant, Antwone meets with Dr. Jerome Davenport who gradually gains his trust and helps him open up about his troubled past. Amidst this progress, Antwone develops feelings for fellow sailor Cheryl. Despite continued altercations, Davenport attempts to guide Antwone’s emotions towards something positive by exploring his feelings for Cheryl. Finally, Antwone embarks on a date with Cheryl and begins a meaningful relationship with her.
