Apocalypse Now (1979)

The American epic war film, Apocalypse Now (1979), was produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola. It begins in Saigon, South Vietnam in late 1969 where U.S. Army Captain and special operations veteran Benjamin L. Willard has returned on another combat tour during the Vietnam War. He openly admits that he is unable to readjust to society in the USA and shares that his marriage has ended. In his room, he drinks heavily, chain-smokes, and experiences hallucinations alone until one day when he becomes upset and injures himself by shattering a large mirror. Soon after, two military policemen arrive to escort him to an officers’ trailer where Lt. General R. Corman and Colonel Lucas from military intelligence approach him with a top-secret mission – to follow the Nung River into the remote jungle and locate rogue Special Forces Colonel Walter E. Kurtz in order to “terminate his command with extreme prejudice.
It seems that Kurtz has lost his sanity and now leads Montagnard troops in neutral Cambodia. A recording of Kurtz’s ramblings, obtained by Army intelligence, is played where he speaks of the destruction of war and a snail on a straight razor. Willard is then transported via helicopter to Cam Ranh Bay to join ‘Chief’ Phillips and his Navy PBR crew, including Lance, ‘Chef’, and ‘Mr. Clean’. Willard notes that the majority of the crew are young soldiers; Clean is just 17 years old from the South Bronx, Lance is a well-known surfer from California, and Chef hails from New Orleans as a chef. The Chief, an experienced sailor, had previously led a special operations soldier on a similar mission in the jungles of Vietnam. Sadly, the soldier ended up taking his own life. As they journey down the coast towards the Nung River, Willard’s voice-over confesses that hearing Kurtz’s voice sparked a deep interest in the man himself.
