Apocalypto (2006)
Apocalypto (2006) is an epic historical action-adventure film produced and directed by Mel Gibson, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Farhad Safinia. While on a hunting trip in the Mesoamerican rainforest, Jaguar Paw and his father Flint Sky encounter a group of refugees escaping from war and devastation. Upon returning to their village, Flint Sky warns Jaguar Paw to never allow fear to overtake him, as it has with the frightened refugees. That evening, an elder shares a prophetic tale about a being consumed by an insatiable emptiness that can never be satisfied, no matter how many gifts are offered. The being will continue taking until there is nothing left in the world for him to take, ultimately leading to its destruction. The next day, Maya raiders led by Zero Wolf attack the village and cause devastating losses, including the death of Flint Sky at the hands of ruthless raider Middle Eye.
In the chaos, Jaguar Paw hides his pregnant wife Seven and young son Turtles Run in an empty well before he himself is captured. Following the raid, the surviving villagers are rounded up and forced on a lengthy march through the jungle by the raiders. All the while, Seven and Turtles Run remain confined in the well, struggling to break free. Along their journey, they come across devastated forests and vast fields of failed maize crops, as well as villages ravaged by an unknown illness. Their path also leads them to an infected young girl who foretells the demise of the Maya world. Eventually reaching the city, the captives are separated; women are traded into slavery while men are taken to the top of a pyramid where they meet a brutal end as offerings to appease the gods.
