Apollo 13 (1995)

Apollo 13 (1995), a docudrama directed by Ron Howard, follows the journey of astronaut Jim Lovell as he prepares for his next space mission after having orbited the Moon on Apollo 8. Excitement builds as Lovell and his guests gather to watch Neil Armstrong’s historical steps on the Moon from Apollo 11. Lovell shares with his wife Marilyn his desire to one day walk on the lunar surface. However, a twist of events occurs when Lovell’s crew is informed that they will be flying Apollo 13 instead of their initially assigned mission, due to a swap with Alan Shepard’s crew. Alongside Ken Mattingly and Fred Haise, Lovell trains relentlessly for their upcoming voyage. Just days before launch in April 1970, an unfortunate circumstance arises as Mattingly is exposed to German measles. The flight surgeon quickly makes the decision to replace him with Mattingly’s backup, Jack Swigert.
Despite Lovell’s initial resistance, he eventually agrees to break up his team when Slayton threatens to delay their mission. As the launch draws near, Marilyn has a disturbing dream about her husband’s potential death in space. She tells Lovell she won’t be going to Kennedy Space Center for his fourth launch, but later changes her mind and surprises him. On launch day, Flight Director Gene Kranz at Mission Control gives the green light for liftoff. As the Saturn V rocket ascends through the atmosphere, one of its engines shuts off too soon. However, the spacecraft still reaches its intended orbit around Earth. After the third stage reignites and sends Apollo 13 towards the Moon, Swigert carries out a maneuver to align the Command Module Odyssey with the Lunar Module Aquarius and separate it from the used-up rocket.
