Following his ascension to the throne of Atlantis four years prior, Arthur Curry has established a peaceful reign, balancing his time between land and sea. Meanwhile, his arch-nemesis David Kane, also known as Black Manta, remains determined to seek vengeance for his father’s death and enlists marine biologist Stephen Shin in his quest to locate powerful Atlantean artifacts. However, their search takes an unexpected turn when they stumble upon a hidden cavern in Antarctica housing a mysterious Black Trident that forcefully possesses Manta.
Five months later, Manta makes another bold move by breaking into an Orichalcum reserve on Atlantis in order to fuel ancient Atlantean technology with unknown designs. His daring heist is met with resistance from Atlantean forces and leads to a fierce battle where even Mera is injured while trying to stop him. Arthur discovers that the utilization of Orichalcum, which releases significant levels of greenhouse gases, has not only resulted in elevated global temperatures and devastating effects on the environment, but also nearly led to the extinction of a previous civilization ruled by ancient Atlanteans. In order to uncover Manta’s location, Arthur helps his half-brother, Orm, escape from prison and together they venture to a pirate stronghold known as the Sunken Citadel.
