Arctic (2018) is an Icelandic survival drama film directed by Joe Penna and written by Penna and Ryan Morrison. Overgård, stranded in the Arctic Circle after his plane crashes, goes about his daily routine of checking fishing lines, mapping his surroundings, and operating a distress beacon powered by a hand-crank dynamo. However, one day his supply of fish is raided by a polar bear. As he continues to wait for rescue, a helicopter finally responds to his beacon’s signal. Unfortunately, it crashes upon landing. The pilot is killed in the accident while the passenger, unable to communicate due to her lack of English proficiency, remains unconscious with severe injuries. Overgård tends to her wounds and brings her back to his plane where she only shows signs of alertness through squeezing his hand. He then goes back to the crash site where he finds useful items such as food, a propane cooking stove, medical supplies, a sled, a map of the area and a photo of the woman with whom he has rescued from the wreckage along with her child and husband – all of which he brings back to their temporary shelter.

After spotting a potential refuge on the map, he realizes it would take several days to reach. Witnessing no improvement in the woman’s condition, he resolves to make the trek himself in search of help, taking the most direct route possible. He secures her to the sledge and pulls her behind him, encountering an unexpected steep slope. He manages to navigate it alone and discovers a smoother path ahead, yet struggles three times to bring the woman up using ropes. Faced with this roadblock, he must opt for a longer route that circumvents icy outcrops – a detour that will inevitably add at least three days to his journey. The open terrain is battered by strong headwinds as they travel along it, seeking shelter one night in a cave where their cooking fish lures a polar bear. He successfully fends off the bear with a distress flare. Sadly, despite his efforts, the woman’s condition takes a turn for the worse. Believing her to be deceased or close to it, he makes the difficult decision to continue on alone but leaves her with a photo of her loved ones before departing.
