Arizona Dream (1993)
The indie film Arizona Dream (1993), written and directed by Emir Kusturica, follows Axel’s journey from New York City to Arizona for his uncle Leo’s wedding. After being convinced by his cousin Paul, Axel agrees to stay in Arizona and take over the family business of selling Cadillacs. Along the way, he meets two intriguing women: Elaine, who dreams of building a flying machine, and her stepdaughter Grace, who longs to be reincarnated as a turtle. In one memorable scene, Axel and Paul struggle with Grace’s stubborn pet turtle during dinner while she floats in a levitating chair with a smile on her face. This moment could be interpreted as symbolizing Grace’s ability to transcend the limitations of the turtle.
As Axel becomes infatuated with Elaine, he is determined to help her achieve her aspirations. While constructing their invention together, Grace begins sabotaging it. Despite this setback, Axel perseveres and rebuilds it. Shortly after, Leo and Paul show up at Elaine and Grace’s residence to persuade Axel to return, but are met with a threat from Elaine holding a shotgun. Eventually, the machine is completed and put to the test, but unfortunately crashes into a tree. Feeling overwhelmed, Axel contemplates ending both Elaine and Grace’s suffering but ultimately cannot follow through. Surprisingly, Grace suggests playing Russian Roulette with Axel. Although initially scared, he eventually pulls the trigger multiple times on his second turn without injury.
