Armageddon (1998), an American science fiction disaster film, was both produced and directed by Michael Bay with Jerry Bruckheimer also on board. In the film, a colossal meteor shower obliterates the orbiting Space Shuttle Atlantis and proceeds to pummel various cities including New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Moncton, Halifax, and Newfoundland. Later in the film, we learn that these meteors were knocked out of the asteroid belt due to a collision with a rogue comet. In addition, this same collision caused a massive asteroid – comparable in size to Texas – to veer off course and directly towards Earth. With only 18 days until impact, NASA scrambles to come up with a plan to save humanity. Their solution involves drilling deep into the asteroid and detonating a nuclear bomb within its core.
Harry Stamper, a third-generation oil driller and owner of his own drilling company, is recruited for the mission. He agrees to participate on the condition that he bring in his own team. This carefully selected team includes Chick Chapel, Harry’s best friend and right-hand man, along with geologists Rockhound and Oscar Choice. The drilling crew consists of Bear Curlene, Freddie Noonan, Max Lennert, and A.J. Frost, who has been dating Harry’s daughter Grace against his wishes. The team undergoes intensive training for twelve days with astronaut Willie Sharp, who will pilot Freedom into space alongside another shuttle called Independence. Before embarking on the mission, Chick makes amends with his ex-wife and reconnects with his son, who is unaware of their relation.
