Army of Shadows (1969)
Army of Shadows (1969) is a World War II suspense-drama film written and directed by Jean-Pierre Melville. Philippe Gerbier, the head of a French Resistance cell, is arrested on suspicion of Resistance activity by Vichy French police. Despite being acquitted due to insufficient evidence, he is sent to an internment camp. Gerbier and a young Communist collaborate on an escape plan, but before they can carry it out, he is transferred to Paris. While awaiting interrogation by the Gestapo, Gerbier manages to kill a guard and flee. In Marseille, he reunites with Félix Lepercq, Guillaume ‘Le Bison’ Vermersch, and Claude ‘Le Masque’ Ullmann. Together they devise a trap for Paul Dounat, the former agent who betrayed Gerbier. They lead him to a nearby house but realize that they cannot use their guns as new occupants have moved in.
Lacking proper weapons, they resort to strangling their former associate instead. Félix runs into his former comrade Jean-François Jardie at a bar and convinces the adventurous ex-pilot to join the Resistance. During their operation in Paris, Jean-François pays a visit to his older brother Luc, known for his intellectual pursuits and seemingly isolated existence. Later, he heads to the Mediterranean coast where Gerbier and their leader, known as the ‘Big Boss’, are coordinating the evacuation of Allied soldiers to London via submarine through Gibraltar. Despite not recognizing him in the dimly lit surroundings, Jean-François discovers that the mysterious Big Boss is actually his secretive brother Luc.
