Based on the 1998 short story Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang, Arrival (2016) is an American science fiction drama film directed by Denis Villeneuve and adapted by Eric Heisserer. Linguist Louise Banks’s twelve-year-old daughter Hannah dies from an incurable illness, as twelve extraterrestrial spacecraft appear over different locations on Earth. Amidst widespread panic, various nations send military and scientific experts to investigate. In the United States, US Army Colonel Weber enlists Banks and physicist Ian Donnelly to study the Montana spacecraft. Together, they make contact with two seven-limbed aliens resembling cephalopods, referred to as ‘heptapods’ or Abbott and Costello. As they research the aliens’ complex written language, which consists of circular symbols forming palindromic phrases, Banks begins to experience flashbacks of her late daughter. The team shares their findings with other nations while Banks delves deeper into the language.
After establishing a shared vocabulary, Banks inquires about the purpose of the aliens’ visit. Their response is translated as ‘offer weapon’, which prompts China to interpret it as ‘use weapon’. This causes a breakdown in communication, with other nations following suit. However, Banks argues that the symbol for ‘weapon’ could also represent the idea of ‘means’ or ‘tool’. The Chinese likely misunderstand due to their use of mahjong when interacting with the aliens, known for its intense competition. Meanwhile, rogue soldiers secretly plant a bomb in the Montana craft. Unaware, Banks and Donnelly enter the vessel again and receive a more complex message from the aliens. Just before the bomb detonates, one of them ejects Donnelly and Banks, rendering them unconscious. When they come to, they find that the alien craft has moved beyond their reach and the US military is preparing for evacuation in case of retaliation.
