Arthur Christmas (2011)
The animated Christmas comedy film, Arthur Christmas (2011), was co-produced by Sony Pictures Animation and Aardman Animations. Instead of a single individual, the title of Santa Claus has been passed down for generations to gift-givers. Currently on his seventieth mission, the current Santa, Malcolm Claus, holds more of a ceremonial role. The traditional sleigh and reindeer have been replaced by the S-1, a state-of-the-art vessel operated by hundreds of elves who use advanced equipment and military precision to deliver presents. All the intricate details of Christmas are meticulously managed from Mission Control at the North Pole by Malcolm’s eldest son, Steve. He is expected to take over as Santa after his father retires. In the meantime, Malcolm’s younger son, Arthur, spends his time responding to letters from children addressed to Santa.
During a Christmas Eve delivery in Poland, an unfortunate incident occurs where a toy is inadvertently activated and nearly exposes Santa to a child. This results in a tense escape operation on the S-1, during which a present falls from the supply line due to an elf accidentally pressing a button. Fortunately, another elf named Bryony Shelfley discovers the overlooked gift—a wrapped bicycle intended for Gwen Hines, who Arthur had personally responded to her letter from Trelew, Cornwall. Arthur is understandably upset at this mishap and urges his father and brother to use the S-1 to deliver the present. However, Steve disagrees and believes it was merely a minor error out of billions of deliveries. He reminds everyone that this year’s Christmas has been the most successful in history.
