Astro Boy (2009)
The animated superhero film, Astro Boy (2009), is a loose adaptation of the manga series by Japanese writer and illustrator Osamu Tezuka. Set in the futuristic city-state of Metro City in the 22nd century, the story follows teenage protagonist Toby Tenma. His father, Dr. Tenma, works at the Ministry of Science alongside his colleague Dr. Elefun. Together, they create the Peacekeeper – a highly advanced defensive robot powered by two opposite energy spheres – one blue and one red. These powerful orbs were discovered from a star fragment by Dr. Elefun himself. The two scientists then present their creation to Stone, the President of Metro City who is currently seeking re-election. Despite their warnings, Stone inserts the negative red core into Peacekeeper, causing it to turn hostile immediately. In a frantic attempt to escape from the research facility, Peacekeeper accidentally kills Toby before being deactivated by Dr. Elefun.
Tenma, driven by distress, brings Toby back to life as a robot with all his memories. To ensure Toby’s safety, Tenma equips the robot with built-in defenses. With the help of the positive blue core, the robot awakens and identifies itself as Toby. However, despite having similar personality traits and memories as Toby, Tenma realizes that nothing can ever replace the original. As Toby begins to explore his new robotic abilities such as understanding other non-verbal robots and flying with rocket-power, Stone’s forces start to pursue him. In the midst of the chase, Stone’s flagship launches missiles at Toby causing him to fall off the city’s edge. Meanwhile, in order to escape arrest, Tenma agrees to deactivate Toby and surrender the blue core.
