At Play in the Fields of the Lord (1991)
At Play in the Fields of the Lord (1991) is an epic adventure drama directed by Héctor Babenco, based on Peter Matthiessen’s 1965 novel. Two explorers, Lewis Moon and Wolf, are stranded in Mãe de Deus (Portuguese for ‘Mother of God’), a remote outpost deep within the Brazilian Amazon River basin, when their plane runs out of fuel. The local police commander has his own agenda: he wants to relocate the nearby Niaruna tribe to avoid conflict with gold miners moving into the area and to appease the provincial government. To achieve this, he makes a deal with Moon: if he and his mercenary colleague bomb the Niaruna village from above, they will receive enough fuel to leave. Meanwhile, Christian evangelist Martin Quarrier and his wife Hazel arrive with their son Billy to spread their religion amongst the indigenous Niaruna people.
Upon arriving in Mãe de Deus, they meet Leslie and Andy Huben, fellow missionaries who reside with a Niaruna helper. While in the town, they also come across a Catholic priest who desires to establish a mission for the Niarunas once again, after the previous missionary was killed by them. However, after Moon and Wolf depart in their plane to confront the Niarunas, Moon’s perspective shifts upon witnessing the community firsthand and observing a native American shooting an arrow at their aircraft. Ultimately, they decide to return to Mãe de Deus. Later that night, following a conversation with Wolf and Quarrier as well as the priest’s presence, Moon ingests a native drug and begins experiencing hallucinations. Subsequently, he sets off on his own in his plane and eventually parachutes into the Niaruna village.
