Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) is an American animated science fiction action-adventure film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and released by Walt Disney Pictures. In 6,800 BC, a massive explosion triggers a megatsunami that threatens the city of Atlantis. As the continent and city are submerged beneath the waves, the Queen sacrifices herself, merging with a floating crystal to create a protective dome over the innermost district. In 1914, Milo Thatch, a linguist and cartographer at the Smithsonian Institution, meets his grandfather’s old friend Preston B. Whitmore. Whitmore discloses that he made a bet with Thaddeus to fund an expedition to Atlantis and convinces Milo to join them. To aid in their journey, Whitmore gives Milo the Shepherd’s Journal – a book detailing the history and route to Atlantis. Leading the expedition is Commander Lyle Rourke.
Lieutenant Helga Sinclair, who had introduced Milo to Whitmore, is part of the crew along with demolitions expert Vinny Santorini, geologist Gaetan Molière, medical officer Dr. Sweet, head mechanic Audrey Ramirez, radio operator Mrs. Packard, chef Cookie, and many soldiers and sailors. They are on board the Ulysses submarine when it is attacked and destroyed by a mechanical leviathan guarding the entrance to Atlantis. Following the journal’s instructions, they journey through a dormant volcano until they reach Atlantis. There they meet Kida, who appears to be a young adult and against her father’s wishes, she asks for Milo’s help in recovering Atlantis’ history which has been decaying for centuries. Milo discovers that the Heart of Atlantis is a powerful crystal that gives the people longevity and once powered their machines through smaller crystals they wear. However, Rourke plans to steal the Heart and sell it despite knowing it will kill the inhabitants of Atlantis.
