Attack Force Z (1981)
Attack Force Z (1981) is an Australian-Taiwanese film directed by Tim Burstall. Loosely based on real events, it was shot in Taiwan in 1979. In the Straits of Sembaleng, a team is sent by submarine to rescue survivors of a downed plane on an occupied island. Led by Paul Kelly, an inexperienced commando officer, they stealthily land and conceal their kayaks before heading inland. During the journey, Ted ‘Kingo’ King is struck by fire from a hidden machine gun post. The team swiftly eliminates the enemy and returns to King’s side. Unfortunately, he has been badly wounded and must not be captured by the Japanese for fear of compromising the mission. After sharing a final cigarette with him, Costello makes the difficult decision to end King’s suffering with a single gunshot.
The four remaining men resume their search and encounter a rice farmer. From him, they obtain information about the location of the crashed plane. Unfortunately, the farmer is also silenced to keep their mission a secret. As they approach their destination, they notice a Japanese squad at a nearby house. After the Japanese leave, they enter the house and meet Lin, the leader of the local resistance, along with his daughter Chien Hua and her younger siblings. With the help of a guide, they set off towards the plane but face an attack by Japanese soldiers at a Buddhist temple. During the chaos, interpreter Jan Veitch gets separated from the group and ends up seeking refuge at Lin’s house where Chien Hua protects him from being discovered by the returning Japanese.
