August 32nd on Earth in English (1998), is a Canadian drama film directed and written by Denis Villeneuve. This was his first time directing a feature film and it was produced by Roger Frappier. The movie was shown in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. Additionally, it was chosen as Canada’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film at the 71st Academy Awards, but did not receive a nomination.
After miraculously surviving a car crash, Simone, who works as a photo model, finds herself yearning for purpose in her life. She turns to her close friend Philippe and asks for his help in getting pregnant. Despite some hesitation, Philippe agrees to assist on the condition that they conceive in a desert setting. In order to find the perfect location, they embark on a 24-hour journey from Montréal to Salt Lake City.
