August: Osage County (2013), a film directed by John Wells, is a tragicomedy based on Tracy Letts’ Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Set in the scorching month of August in rural Pawhuska, Oklahoma, the story centers around Beverly Weston, a once-famous poet struggling with alcoholism. He hires Johnna, a young Cheyenne woman, to work as a live-in cook and caregiver for his wife Violet. Violet is battling oral cancer and a narcotic addiction. After Beverly disappears, Violet turns to her sister and daughters for help. Along with her husband Charles Aiken, Violet’s sister Mattie Fae arrives to offer support. Meanwhile, Barbara (Violet’s oldest daughter) comes from Colorado with her estranged husband Bill and their 14-year-old daughter Jean. Despite their separation, Barbara and Bill present a united front for Violet’s sake.
After five days, the sheriff brings the news that Beverly had drowned while out on his boat. Karen, the youngest daughter, introduces her new fiancé, a sleazy Florida businessman named Steve Huberbrecht, to the family. Mattie Fae and Charles’s son ‘Little Charles’ misses the funeral due to oversleeping and is picked up by his father at the bus station. While Charles loves his son unconditionally, Mattie Fae continuously berates him. Ivy reveals to her sisters that she loves Little Charles, who is planning to move to New York, and shares that she cannot have children because of a previous hysterectomy. She sees this as her only opportunity to finally get married.
