Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997) is an American spy comedy film directed by Jay Roach. In 1967, British spy Austin Powers saves the day by stopping an assassination attempt by his archenemy, Dr. Evil, at a London nightclub. Following the incident, Dr. Evil flees to space and freezes himself cryogenically. To ensure that he is ready in case of a future threat from Dr. Evil, Austin willingly goes into cryostasis himself. Three decades later, Dr. Evil returns to find that his henchman Number 2 has turned Virtucon, the front for his empire, into a highly profitable business venture. However, instead of focusing on the legitimate side of things, Dr. Evil plots to steal nuclear weapons and hold the world ransom for $1 million. As inflation has caused the value of the dollar to decrease since his absence, he raises his demand to $100 billion.
During his time away, Dr. Evil also discovers that his colleagues have artificially created a teenage son named Scott using his frozen semen. However, Scott harbors resentment towards his father for leaving him behind and resists any attempts at bonding. After receiving news of Dr. Evil’s comeback, the British Ministry of Defence thaws Austin out of cryogenic freezing and assists him in adjusting to the 1990s alongside agent Vanessa Kensington, who happens to be the daughter of his former partner Mrs. Kensington. Disguised as a married couple, Austin and Vanessa head to Las Vegas where they encounter Number 2’s secretary, Alotta Fagina. In order to gather intel, Austin sneaks into Fagina’s luxurious penthouse and stumbles upon Dr. Evil’s plot to use a nuclear warhead to induce global volcanic eruptions from within the Earth’s core.
