Australia (2008)
Baz Luhrmann’s epic adventure drama, Australia (2008), follows Lady Sarah Ashley as she travels to her husband’s faltering cattle station, Faraway Downs. It is 1939, just before the start of World War II, and Lady Sarah hopes to make her husband sell the station and save their marriage. However, upon arriving in Australia from England, she learns that her husband has been murdered by an Aboriginal elder known as ‘King George’. The vast Faraway Downs spans across Western Australia and the Northern Territory, reaching all the way to the Timor Sea. In order to secure control of the station for himself and sell it to meat tycoon Lesley ‘King’ Carney, the station’s manager, Neil Fletcher, makes secret plans. Meanwhile, Australian Army officer Captain Dutton is tasked with negotiating beef prices with Carney on behalf of the Allies in Darwin.
As Lady Sarah teams up with a drover called ‘The Drover’ to fulfil her mission at Faraway Downs, tensions rise between competing parties as they all try to gain control of this valuable piece of land. Childless Lady Sarah is charmed by the young boy Nullah, whose mother is Aboriginal and father is white. After catching Fletcher’s treacherous actions, Nullah confides in Lady Sarah and she promptly dismisses Fletcher from the cattle station. The following day, police show up to take Nullah to Mission Island, as they have done with other mixed-race children. In an attempt to escape, Nullah’s mother Daisy tragically loses her life while hiding with him in a water tower. In a comforting gesture, Lady Sarah sings ‘Over the Rainbow’ to Nullah. He reveals that his grandfather is known as ‘King George’ and shares his belief that he possesses magical abilities like the Wizard of Oz. Lady Sarah convinces Drover to transport the cattle to Darwin for sale.
