Autumn in New York (2000)
Autumn in New York (2000), the American romantic drama directed by Joan Chen and written by Allison Burnett, tells the story of a successful and charming restaurant owner named Will Keane. At 48 years old, he is known for his womanizing ways. One night, while celebrating her 22nd birthday at his upscale Manhattan restaurant, Will meets free-spirited Charlotte Fielding. Their introduction comes from Charlotte’s grandmother, who reveals that Charlotte is the daughter of Will’s ex-girlfriend Katy. Unfortunately, Katy passed away in a car accident shortly after giving birth to Charlotte. The next day, Will calls Charlotte and asks for her help in making a hat for a date he has coming up. When she delivers the hat to his apartment a few days later, he invites her to be his date to a formal benefit dinner under the pretense that he had been stood up.
As they spend more time together at the event, they become lovers. However, over breakfast the following morning on his terrace, Will explains that their relationship cannot have a future due to their age difference. This admission prompts Charlotte to reveal that she is dying from a heart condition. The following day, they stroll among the autumn leaves in Central Park. Charlotte playfully borrows Will’s watch, promising to return it once he forgets she has it. Later on at his restaurant, they team up to cook a meal for his employees, and Will starts developing feelings for her. However, upon returning to his place, Charlotte experiences intense chest pains and Will rushes her to the hospital. The doctor reveals that her neuroblastoma, a rare condition in young adults, has caused a tumor near her heart. Sadly, they estimate she only has one year left to live.
