The American action adventure fantasy television series, Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024), is a live-action adaptation of the animated television series with the same name (2005-2008). Showrunner Albert Kim announced its development in September 2018. Netflix released the first season, consisting of eight episodes, on February 22, 2024 to mixed to positive reviews from critics. Production and filming took place in Vancouver, British Columbia starting on November 16, 2021 under the working titles Trade Winds and Blue Dawn. Cinematographer Stewart Whelan wrapped principal photography on June 17, 2022. According to Rotten Tomatoes’ review aggregator based on 56 critic reviews, the series received a 59% approval rating with a consensus that it serves as a solid live-action entry point into the beloved franchise while only occasionally recapturing its source material’s magic. Metacritic gave it an average score of 56 out of 100 based on the opinions of 26 critics.
The series takes place in a war-torn world inspired by diverse Asian and Indigenous cultures. In this world, some individuals possess the ability to manipulate one of the four classical elements: water, earth, fire or air. The protagonist, Aang, is both the ‘Avatar’ and the sole surviving Airbender. As the link between the mortal and spirit realms, he possesses the rare gift of bending all four elements rather than just one. It is his duty as the Avatar to maintain harmony between humankind and nature in order to bring about peace. However, Aang now faces a daunting challenge as he must put an end to the Fire Nation’s ambitious plan for world domination. Accompanied by new friends Katara and Sokka, Aang embarks on a journey to master all four elements while being pursued by Zuko, the banished crown prince of the Fire Nation who aims to redeem himself by capturing Aang.
