Awake (2007) is an American conspiracy thriller film written and directed by Joby Harold. Clay Beresford, Jr., a young billionaire, has fallen for his mother’s personal assistant, Samantha ‘Sam’ Lockwood. In need of a heart transplant, Clay turns to his friend and heart surgeon, Dr. Jack Harper. He also asks Dr. Harper to help him elope with Sam, and the two exchange vows privately in the middle of the night before Clay heads to the hospital for his operation. However, something unexpected happens during surgery – Clay experiences anesthesia awareness. Despite the intense pain, he has a moment of clairvoyance and uncovers Dr. Harper’s sinister plan to kill him.
In this vision, he also learns that Sam was involved in the plot, having conspired with Dr. Harper against him by working at the hospital and injecting poison into his donor heart in order to collect insurance money and pay off Dr. Harper’s malpractice lawsuits while simultaneously ending Clay’s life. The plan comes undone and Lilith, realizing the outcome, sacrifices her own life to save Clay’s. She dies by suicide so her heart can be replaced with the poisoned one, ultimately saving Clay. While Sam attempts to escape consequences for her actions, Dr. Harper is plagued with guilt and holds onto evidence to ensure her arrest. A different surgical team takes over as Clay’s condition worsens and the conspirators are apprehended. Lilith’s heart is successfully transplanted into Clay’s body by the new team, and they share their last moments together in spirit during an out-of-body experience.
