Away We Go (2009)
The film Away We Go (2009), directed by Sam Mendes and written by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida, follows the story of Verona De Tessant and Burt Farlander, a young couple living in Denver. Struggling to make ends meet and create a fulfilling life for themselves, they receive unexpected news of their upcoming parenthood. As they contemplate how and where to raise their child and build a happy family, they decide to visit Burt’s parents, Gloria and Jerry, who live nearby. However, upon arriving at their home, they discover that Gloria and Jerry are moving to Antwerp, Belgium just one month before the baby is due. Despite Burt’s frustration with his parents’ selfishness and lack of consideration for their situation, he and Verona see this as an opportunity to find a new place to call home. With both of them being able to work remotely from anywhere, they set out on a journey to find the perfect place to raise their family.
After stopping in Phoenix to catch up with Verona’s ex-boss Lily, her husband Lowell, and their children, Burt becomes uncomfortable with the couple’s abrasive dynamic. The couple then heads to Tucson to see Verona’s sister Grace. Verona hopes that Burt can convince Grace to leave her dull boyfriend, but their plans are interrupted when Burt receives a call and lightens the mood with his signature humor. Grace remarks on how fortunate Verona is to have Burt as her partner, a sentiment that Verona shares. Their next destination is Madison, Wisconsin, where they meet up with Burt’s childhood friend and self-proclaimed cousin ‘LN’ (pronounced ‘ellen’). LN is a professor at the University of Wisconsin who inherited wealth and unconventional beliefs about parenting.
