Baby It's You (1983)
Written and directed by John Sayles, Baby It’s You (1983) is a romantic comedy drama set in 1966 New Jersey. Jill Rosen, an upper-middle-class Jewish girl headed for Sarah Lawrence College, enters into a relationship with the Sheik, a blue-collar Italian boy with dreams of becoming the next Frank Sinatra. While Jill excels in high school acting productions, the Sheik has a one-night stand with Jody, one of Jill’s close friends. However, their budding romance is cut short when the Sheik is expelled from school and flees to Miami, Florida after being involved in an attempted robbery. In the fall of 1967, Jill begins her first year at Sarah Lawrence where she befriends Leslie.
Leslie introduces Jill to her boyfriend’s friend, Steve. The two couples occasionally go on double dates. During spring break, Jill visits Sheik in Florida where he works washing dishes at a nightclub and lip synching to Frank Sinatra music on weekends. Despite realizing his lack of prospects, she still chooses to have sex with him. As they are about to undress, the conversation turns to his peculiar nickname that she never understood in high school. He finally reveals that it comes from the Sheik brand of condoms. After returning to college no longer a virgin, Jill ends up sleeping with Steve. Meanwhile, Sheik is replaced by a real singer at work, causing him great embarrassment and forcing him to confront his limited opportunities.
