Back to School (1986) is an American comedy film directed by Alan Metter. The protagonist, Thornton Meloni, is an Italian-American whose dream is to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a tailor. However, after receiving a poor report card from school one day, his father warns him about the importance of education: ‘A man with no education has nothing’. Over the years, Thornton changes his last name to ‘Melon’ and becomes a successful businessman, opening a chain of plus-size clothing stores and investing in various other ventures. Through photos, we see his journey of acquiring property and starting a family – including his son Jason. In the present day, Jason is now a college student who has lost touch with his father. Thornton’s first wife has passed away, and he has since remarried to Vanessa – who seems more interested in his wealth than anything else.

Thornton reaches his breaking point when Vanessa throws a lavish party and he decides he wants to see Jason. He divorces Vanessa for her infidelity and asks Lou, his bodyguard and chauffeur, to take him to Grand Lakes University. While there, Thornton discovers that Jason is struggling as a C-student who is unhappy with college life and wants to drop out. Jason is a towel boy for the diving team instead of a member, has been rejected by fraternities, constantly harassed by popular diver Chas Osborne, and lacks friends except for his roommate Derek Lutz. Despite this, Thornton encourages Jason to stay in school by deciding to enroll with him. Despite not having the required academic qualifications, Thornton manages to persuade the dean David Martin to admit him by offering a large donation towards a new campus building.
